History

Thousands of years before our era, people already lived in the Geul Valley. Many utensils and building remnants are evidence of intensive habitation during the Roman period. The first written mention of Valkenburg dates back to 1041. The German king Henry III grants four villages to his niece Irmgard. These are Herve, Epen, Vaals, and Valkenburg. The name Falchenberch is clearly legible on the charter.
